I began writing an essay after a series of conversations with clients about growth, becoming, and the stories we carry. But the ideas resisted explanation. They seemed to ask for poetry instead.
What follows is simply an offering from those conversations.
The Shape of Becoming
We are not asked
to bloom all at once.
The earth does not apologise for winter,
nor the river
for taking the long way home.
Some mornings,
our hearts remember the light.
Some mornings,
they remember only the weight.
Both are honest.
Growth is rarely a trumpet.
More often,
it is the unnoticed courage
of turning towards the sun
by the smallest degree.
A hand unclenching.
A deeper breath.
A laugh that surprises us.
The first night
we sleep
without bargaining with yesterday.
Becoming
is not
becoming someone new.
It is gathering the scattered pieces
without shame,
holding each
as though it always belonged.
The cracks remain, perhaps,
but they become riverbeds
where compassion
finds its course.
And one day,
without marking the date,
you notice the landscape within you
has quietly changed.
The places
that once echoed with absence
now welcome birdsong.
There is no finish line.
No final version of ourselves
waiting at the end of the road.
There is only
this quiet invitation
to keep becoming.
Only the next step,
taken with a little more courage,
a little more tenderness.
